What is Osteopathy about?

Osteopathy is centred around the neuro-muscular system. It is a non-invasive, alternative approach to treating musculoskeletal conditions. Practitioners use different techniques such as spinal adjustments, massage and dry needling to restore the normal pain free punctuation of the body. This kind of alternative treatment has seen increased popularity to traditional medical methods.

Techniques used by our Osteopaths

There are many different treatments on offer at Anderson Osteopathy, All of which are designed to help achieve the results that the patient is after. Some of the techniques used by our Osteopaths are:

  • HVLA – High-Velocity Low-Amplitude.
This technique is used to restore normal movement of any joint that could be restricted with its movement. It works by applying a specific, quick, therapeutic force to restore the normal function of the targeted joint. This style is commonly referred to by patients as ‘cracking’ as some joints may make a small pop when this is used. This pop or click is simply small pockets of air being released from the fluid surrounding the joint.

  • Dry needling
This style of treatment is a very specific technique in which the practitioner will insert a sterile, fine filament needle into the patient’s muscle to help reduce pain and restore the normal function. This is also known as myofascial trigger point dry needling or intramuscular stimulation and works in a similar way to acupuncture.

  • Cupping
Cupping technique is a type of massage in which suction cups are placed onto the patient’s skin which acts as a partial vacuum to lift the skin and muscular structures underneath it. By doing this, it aims to release muscular tension, reduced adhesions and help reduce pain throughout the body.

Techniques continued:

  • Soft tissue Technique
Soft tissue involves direct, controlled pressure applied to the affected muscle, ligament or tendon. Soft tissue massage is the most common form but also can include tripper point release.

  • MET – Muscle Energy Technique
MET covers a broad range of different techniques. It mainly involves the patient activating a particular muscle or group while the practitioner provides resistance. The action allows for normal movement to return to the muscle.

  • Rehabilitation
Exercise based therapy used to aid in the restoration of the normal function of the body. These are tailored specifically to the patient depending on the presenting complaint.
